Frequently asked questions

For hours 13-23, subtract 12 and add PM. For hours 1-11, add AM. 0 = 12 AM (midnight). Examples: 1430 = 2:30 PM, 0800 = 8:00 AM, 2200 = 10:00 PM, 0000 = 12:00 AM.

For PM hours (except 12 PM), add 12. For AM hours (except 12 AM), keep as-is with leading zero. 2:30 PM = 1430, 8:00 AM = 0800, 12:00 PM = 1200, 12:00 AM = 0000.

Both represent midnight. 0000 means the start of a new day, while 2400 means the end of the current day. Most standards use 0000. Our converter uses the 0-23 hour range.

Read each digit: 0800 is 'zero eight hundred hours', 1430 is 'fourteen thirty hours', 0015 is 'zero zero fifteen hours'. The word 'hours' is always appended.

Military, aviation (ATC), healthcare (preventing medication errors), law enforcement, public transit schedules and most countries outside the US/Canada/Australia use 24-hour time as the standard.
