Everyday Calculations
Calculate speed, distance or time from any two values, convert Mach numbers to real speeds and work out real distances from map scales.
Results
Some calculations come up again and again in daily life. How long will a 200-mile drive take at 60 mph? How fast is Mach 2 in km/h? How far apart are two points on a 1:50,000 map? These calculators solve the classic speed-distance-time formula, convert aviation Mach numbers to everyday speed units and translate map measurements into real-world distances - all with results in both metric and imperial.
Frequently asked questions
Divide distance by speed: 200 / 60 = 3.33 hours, which is 3 hours and 20 minutes. At 100 km/h (62 mph) the same trip takes about 3 hours and 13 minutes.
At sea level, Mach 1 (the speed of sound) is approximately 767 mph or 1,235 km/h. The speed of sound decreases at higher altitudes due to lower air temperature.
The formula is distance = speed × time. Rearrange to find any unknown: speed = distance / time, time = distance / speed. Make sure your units match - miles with mph, km with km/h.
Multiply the map distance by the scale: 5 cm × 50,000 = 250,000 cm = 2.5 km (about 1.55 miles). Each centimeter on the map represents 500 meters in reality.
At 40,000 feet, Mach 2 is approximately 590 m/s, 2,124 km/h or 1,320 mph. This is slower than Mach 2 at sea level because the speed of sound decreases with altitude.
