Pan size conversion is one of the most practical baking calculations. When you do not have the exact pan a recipe calls for, you need to adjust ingredient amounts based on the area ratio. A 9-inch round pan and an 8-inch square pan have nearly identical areas, making them interchangeable. For other sizes, this calculator does the area math for you.

Yes, an 8-inch square pan (64 sq in) is almost identical in area to a 9-inch round pan (63.6 sq in). No recipe adjustment needed.
An 8x8 pan (64 sq in) is about 55% the area of a 9x13 pan (117 sq in). Multiply all ingredients by 0.55 or roughly halve the recipe.
A 10-inch round pan has 78.5 sq in. The closest square pan is 9 inches (81 sq in), which is close enough for most recipes.
Yes, if you are changing pan depth the batter height changes even if the area is the same. Fill pans no more than 2/3 full to prevent overflow.
