Converting between rectangular pan sizes is essential when you do not have the exact pan a recipe calls for. The conversion is based on area ratio - if the target pan is smaller, you need less batter, and if it is larger, you need more. Always fill pans 1/2 to 2/3 full for best results.

An 8x8 pan (64 sq in) is about 55% the area of a 9x13 pan (117 sq in). Multiply all ingredients by 0.55 or roughly halve the recipe.

Two 8x8 pans have a combined area of 128 sq in versus 117 sq in for a 9x13. The recipe will fit with slightly thinner layers.

Two 9-inch round pans (127 sq in combined) or two 8x8 square pans (128 sq in combined) are the closest alternatives.

Smaller pans with deeper batter need more time, larger pans with thinner batter need less. Adjust by 5-10 minutes and check doneness.

A standard 9x13x2 pan holds about 14-15 cups of batter. An 8x8x2 pan holds about 8 cups.
