Getting the right ratio is everything in drinks. Too much coffee and your pour over is bitter, too little and it is watery. Too few bottles at a dinner party and your guests notice. These calculators handle the math for coffee brewing (pour over, French press, drip, espresso and cold brew) and event planning (wine bottles per guest with standard or generous pours).

Frequently asked questions

The Specialty Coffee Association recommends 1:16 to 1:18 (grams of coffee to ml of water). Start at 1:16 for stronger coffee. For a single 12 oz cup, use about 21g (4 tablespoons) of coffee.

A standard 750 ml bottle holds 5 glasses at a 5 oz (150 ml) pour. With generous 6 oz pours, you get about 4 glasses per bottle.

For a dinner party with 3 glasses per person, you need 60 glasses divided by 5 per bottle = 12 bottles. Buy 13-14 to have a buffer.

Use a coarse grind (like sea salt) for French press with a 1:15 ratio. Steep for 4 minutes. Finer grinds will over-extract and make bitter, muddy coffee.

Cold brew uses a 1:5 ratio (much stronger than hot brew). For 500 ml of water, use 100g of coarse-ground coffee. Steep 12-24 hours, then dilute 1:1 when serving.
