Frequently asked questions

Most beginner runners fall between 6:00 and 7:30 min/km (9:40 to 12:00 min/mi). A comfortable conversational pace where you can speak in full sentences is the right starting point.

Pace is the time it takes to cover one unit of distance (e.g. 5:00 min/km), while speed is the distance covered per unit of time (e.g. 12 km/h). Runners typically think in pace, cyclists in speed.

Use whichever unit your race uses. Most international races use kilometers, so min/km is standard. In the US, many runners use min/mile. This calculator shows both so you can train in either.

Enter your goal time and race distance. For example, a sub-2-hour half marathon (21.1 km in 1:59:59) requires about 5:41 min/km or 9:09 min/mi.

GPS watches calculate instantaneous pace from satellite signals, which can fluctuate on turns and near buildings. This calculator gives your average pace for the entire run, which is more reliable for training analysis.
