When the group ordered very different amounts, splitting evenly feels unfair. This calculator figures out your proportional share by comparing what you ordered to the total bill, then applying the same tip percentage to your portion. Enter the total bill, your items' cost, the tip percentage and group size.

Frequently asked questions

Your share is based on what you ordered as a proportion of the total. If you ordered $35 of a $200 bill, you are responsible for 17.5% of the bill plus 17.5% of the tip. This is fairer than an even split when orders vary widely.

Split shared items evenly among those who ate them, then add that to each person's individual items total. For example, a $20 shared appetizer among 4 people adds $5 to each person's subtotal.

Enter your items at menu price (before tax). The calculator applies tip to your subtotal. If the total bill includes tax, your proportion will automatically include your share of the tax.

This is exactly when proportional splitting shines. The person who ordered a $60 entree pays proportionally more than someone who had a $15 salad, while still contributing fairly to the shared tip.

Add your share of shared items (bottles of wine, pitchers) to your individual order total. If a $50 bottle was shared among 4 people, add $12.50 to your items.
