Landscaping Materials Calculator
Mulch, topsoil, gravel, sod, grass seed and fertilizer calculators - cubic yards, bag counts, tons and pounds by area, depth, species and N-P-K analysis.
The landscaping materials calculators cover every common yard and garden material: mulch and topsoil for garden beds and raised beds, gravel for walkways and driveways, sod for instant lawns, grass seed for new and overseeded lawns and fertilizer scaled to any N-P-K analysis. Each tool returns the unit you actually buy in - cubic yards for bulk delivery, bag counts for retail, tons for gravel by weight, square feet of sod by roll or pallet, pounds of grass seed by species and pounds of fertilizer per application. Depths and seeding rates are built in for every use case: 3 inches of mulch for established beds, 12 inches of topsoil for raised vegetable beds, 4 inches of gravel base for walkways, 8 lbs of fescue seed per 1000 sq ft for new lawns, 1 lb of nitrogen per 1000 sq ft per fertilizer application.
Frequently asked questions
At the recommended 3 inch depth, 100 sq ft needs 25 cubic feet of mulch. That is 13 bags of 2 cubic foot mulch, or about 0.93 cubic yards in bulk. Two inches deep would take 9 bags; 4 inches deep would take 17 bags.
A 4x8 ft raised bed at 12 inches deep needs 32 cubic feet of topsoil - about 1.2 cubic yards or 43 bags of standard 0.75 cu ft topsoil. Bulk delivery is dramatically cheaper for raised beds: 1.2 yards delivered runs $40-80 vs $150+ bagged.
A standard driveway needs 4-6 inches of compacted crushed stone base, plus 2-3 inches of finer top gravel. For a 20x10 driveway with 6 inches of base, you need 3.7 cubic yards (about 5 tons of crushed stone). New driveways usually need 6-8 inches total depth.
Tall fescue and perennial ryegrass: 8 lbs per 1000 sq ft for new lawns, 4 lbs for overseeding. Kentucky bluegrass: 3 lbs new / 1.5 lbs overseed. Bermuda and zoysia: 2 lbs new / 1 lb overseed. Bare patch repair uses double the new-lawn rate.
500 sq ft with 5% waste = 525 sq ft. With small 10 sq ft rolls (2x5 ft): 53 rolls. With large 20 sq ft rolls or slabs: 27 rolls. Or just over 1 pallet (450 sq ft per pallet). Choose seed for budget and large areas, sod for instant front-yard curb appeal.
