The Devine formula is one of the most widely used clinical formulas for estimating ideal body weight. Originally developed in 1974 for drug dosage calculations, it gives a quick reference point based on height and gender. Keep in mind that ideal weight varies based on frame size, muscle mass and individual health factors - this is a general guideline rather than a strict target.

Frequently asked questions

For males: 50 kg + 2.3 kg per inch over 5 feet. For females: 45.5 kg + 2.3 kg per inch over 5 feet. It was created in 1974 by Dr. B.J. Devine.

Using the Devine formula, a 175 cm (5'8.9") male has an ideal weight of about 75.3 kg (166 lb). This is a clinical estimate, not a strict target.

It is a rough clinical guideline, best for medium-framed adults. It can underestimate ideal weight for very tall people and overestimate for short people. Use BMI ranges for a broader perspective.

Men typically have more muscle mass and bone density. The formula starts women at 45.5 kg vs 50 kg for men at 5 feet, reflecting average body composition differences.

The Robinson (1983), Miller (1983) and Hamwi (1964) formulas are alternatives. Each gives slightly different results. Most doctors look at a healthy BMI range (18.5-24.9) rather than a single number.
