Frequently asked questions

BMI equals your weight in kilograms divided by your height in meters squared. For example, 70 kg and 1.75 m gives BMI = 70 / (1.75 x 1.75) = 22.9.

A BMI between 18.5 and 24.9 is considered normal weight. Below 18.5 is underweight, 25-29.9 is overweight and 30 or above is obese.

BMI can be misleading for muscular people because muscle weighs more than fat. A bodybuilder might have a high BMI despite low body fat. Use body fat percentage for a more complete picture.

Some research suggests a BMI of 25-27 may be healthiest for adults over 65. The standard ranges were developed primarily for younger adults.

Checking every few months is sufficient for most people. BMI is a trend indicator - small fluctuations week to week are normal and not meaningful.
