Tipping customs vary around the world but in the US a 15-20% tip is standard at restaurants. When you are traveling or dining in a group the mental math gets tricky fast - especially after splitting a bill four ways. This calculator figures out the tip, adds it to your bill and divides evenly so everyone knows exactly what they owe without fumbling with a phone calculator at the table.

Frequently asked questions

The standard tip is 18-20% for sit-down restaurants. 15% is acceptable for average service. For exceptional service, 25% or more is generous. Always tip on the pre-tax subtotal.

Move the decimal point one place left to get 10%, then double it. For a $50 bill, 10% is $5, so 20% is $10. The total would be $60.

Traditionally you tip on the pre-tax subtotal, not the total including sales tax. However many people tip on the full amount for simplicity. Either approach is acceptable.

Add the tip to the bill total, then divide by the number of people. For a $50 bill with 20% tip ($10), the $60 total split 4 ways is $15 per person.

It varies widely. In the UK and Australia, 10% is generous. In Japan, tipping can be considered rude. In most of Europe, rounding up or leaving 5-10% is common for good service.
