Wallpaper rolls come in different widths and lengths depending on where they are manufactured, which makes estimating quantities confusing. US standard rolls are 21 inches wide and 33 feet long, while European rolls are 53 cm wide and 10 meters long. This calculator accounts for pattern matching waste (about 15%) and gives you the number of rolls needed for your room. Always buy an extra roll for repairs and matching mistakes.

Frequently asked questions

Plan for about 15% waste from pattern matching, trimming and working around corners. Large-repeat patterns waste more - up to 20-25%. Simple textures or solid colors waste less, around 10%.

In the US, wallpaper is priced per single roll but sold in double-roll bolts (two single rolls packaged together). A double roll of 21-inch paper gives you about 57 sq ft of coverage before waste.

For a rough estimate, no - the waste from cuts around openings roughly equals the area you skip. For large picture windows or multiple doors, subtract them and add 1 extra roll instead.

European rolls are wider (53 cm vs 21 inches) and 10 meters long vs 33 feet (about the same). The wider width means fewer seams but can be harder to hang, especially in small rooms.

Buy at least 1 extra roll beyond the calculated amount. Wallpaper from different print runs can have slight color variations, so getting everything from the same batch is essential.
